About Yuelu Mountain National Forest Park

Located on the western bank of the Xiang River in Changsha, Hunan Province, Yuelu Mountain National Forest Park spans an area of approximately 2.1 square kilometers. The park is dominated by Yuelu Mountain, a well-wooded, forest-covered hill rising around 300 meters above sea level. The mountain and its surrounding forests are rich in subtropical evergreen flora, including camphor, pine, and various species of bamboo, supporting a diverse ecosystem habitat to many birds and small mammals. Historically, Yuelu Mountain is a site of great cultural significance, hosting the Yuelu Academy, one of China's four renowned ancient academies, dating back over a thousand years. Visitors to the park can explore numerous historical relics such as ancient temples, pavilions, stone inscriptions, and Taoist and Buddhist sites intertwined in the dense forest. The park offers a network of well-maintained hiking trails that range from easy walks to challenging climbs, culminating at viewpoints that provide sweeping vistas of Changsha city and the Xiangjiang River. The park is favored not only for outdoor recreation such as hiking, bird-watching, and photography but also for cultural tourism, with attractions blending natural beauty and historical legacy. Facilities include scenic picnic areas, rest spots, and easy access from downtown Changsha, making it a popular getaway for both locals and tourists looking to escape the urban bustle. Seasonal changes bring vibrant displays of azaleas in spring and cool, mild weather in autumn, further enhancing the park’s appeal. Yuelu Mountain serves as a green lung for the city while preserving its ancient cultural heritage, striking a unique balance between nature and history.
